Alhambra Hike

Today we set out for the Alhambra -- the sprawling 13th century castle, palace and grounds that is the centerpiece and crown jewel of Granada. It is beautiful, big and crowded with tourists -- the most visited spot in all of Spain.

We started our walk from this point and made our way down and then up to the Alhambra grounds and beyond to the vantage point below.

Three miles later we made it to the top. Just a bunch of Americans wearing our baseball hats (There is no shame in protecting this translucent skin from that incredible sun!) Pat is getting tons of positive attention for his Stone Temple Pilots hat.

We could even spot our cave from this vantage point. (At least, I think that's our cave--we haven't actually moved in yet)

Exhaustion setting in. Rows and rows of olive trees as far as the eye can see behind us.

After our hike to the tippity top, we walked back down to explore the Alhambra grounds that are free to the public (to actually go into the palaces and gardens, you need tickets well in advance). Stopped for some cold fantas/beers and fried fish tapas at a little cafe and then continued our walk.

Will: "Oh my god, I have to go to that store. My three favorite things in life: books, ice cream and snacks"

These massive beautiful stone archways were some of my favorites.

Chastened and looking for protection from Pedro after an arm yank and quiet warning through gritted teeth to cut out his wild behavior.

Feeling better and containing the wildness for a few moments.

And then we walked all the way back up to the Sacromonte neighborhood. Seven miles of walking and 45 gallons of sweat later, we were home in time for a well-deserved siesta.
